Prix Bohemia Radio Festival presents new multimedia projects and inspires vulgarisms debate
At the awards ceremony of the 35th annual international radio production festival, Prix Bohemia Radio, which took place on Thursday in the Archbishop's Palace in Olomouc, the three best authors of works in the Documentary, News Report, Drama categories and a new category, Multimedia, were presented.
On every day of listening sessions, a Student Award was presented independent of the panel of judges. The Thálie Award for best performance in a radio play was presented to Zdenka Procházková. The festival's accompanying programme included a debate on the issue of vulgarisms in broadcasting.
The traditional Documentary award category showed life for what it is. The News Report category led listeners into the dark recesses of prisons and war settings. In the Drama category, topics such as divorce and deconstruction of the human psyche prevailed. The new Multimedia category introduced the creative employment of sound and innovative technologies to listeners. "I am pleased that the 35th annual Prix Bohemia Radio Festival has involved new media as well as traditional Czech and foreign radio productions this year. The Multimedia category was also one of the chances to compare our successes and those of our competitors on the media market domestically and abroad, as well as to discuss the new forms and opportunities that the new media sector offers," said René Zavoral, the Director General of Czech Radio.
The panel of the Actors’ Association Board presented the Thálie Award for best performance in a radio play to Zdenka Procházková for the leading role as Rozalie Lautman in the play The Shop on Main Street.
One of the biggest attractions included in the Prix Bohemia Radio Festival accompanying programme was a debate entitled Where should they go? or On vulgarisms in broadcasting. The head of Czech Radio's drama and literature creative group, Kateřina Rathouská; the head of the Legal Section at Czech Television, Markéta Havlová; the Director of the Institute of Czech language at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Martin Prošek; Czech radio media legislation specialist, Helena Havlíková; and literary theorist and writer, Michal Sýkora came to participate in the discussion with the full-house audience. The entire panel discussion was conducted with one thought in mind – what is still allowable for daytime broadcast, what is barely legal, and how to handle the accumulating complaints.

At the end of every day of listening sessions Student Awards were also presented, independent of the panel of judges, for each individual category. In the Documentary category, it was presented to Vladimír Mareček for his Future Uncertain. In the International News Report category, the Student Award went to Christian Schwalb from German station Radio Bremen for his work entitled Northern Sea Route through the Arctic. In the Drama category, the students picked Young Beautiful Monsters by Florent Barat as their winner, and in the Multimedia category The Industry – Submarine Channel by Mirka Duijn was voted as the best project.
